Kitchen Garden

Term 4 has started in the garden with some serious talk about composting.  Students are learning about the preparation, ingredients and method to create some seriously good compost. This week they learnt about ratios of brown matter to green matter, and the work involved in maintaining the compost bays.

The “Chop and chat” activity allowed students to learn about improving the quality of the nitrogen rich ingredients by chopping them down while the students chat. Basically we were taking plants that had finished, such as broccoli, and chopping them down to a size that would compost more easily. It was wonderful to see the students sitting around and chatting about what they were observing about the greens.

Meanwhile we had a small science lesson on soil testing. The compost soil was a bit more acidic than we want, but easily fixed with some aeration.
